Internet Explorer exception error

My computer has a recurring problem. If left for three or four minutes a message appears which says 'Explorer caused an exception 6d007fh in module webcheck.dll at 0177:78b32599'.

It can usually be closed with no trouble, but if it occurs while I am on the internet it can lock everything so that a shutdown is the only solution. I asked Internet Explorer to repair itself, but it said that webcheck.dll should be 5.0.2314.1000 and it is currently 4.72.3110.0, whatever that means. Please help.

The incorrect version of webcheck.dll is indeed the cause of the problem, and the repair option doesn't work in this case. The only solution - according to Microsoft - is to reinstall Internet Explorer 5.0 from scratch. Before doing so it would be worth using the Find tool to see if the correct version of the DLL is located somewhere on your hard disk (in which case you can replace the erroneous one with it). Alternatively, you could try and get a copy of the correct version from someone else's computer.
